Freedom and individual responsibility, entrepreneurial spirit and open-mindedness: ETH Zurich stands on a bedrock of true Swiss values. Our university for science and technology dates back to the year 1855, when the founders of modern-day Switzerland created it as a center of innovation and knowledge. At ETH Zurich, students discover an ideal environment for independent thinking, researchers a climate which inspires top performance. Situated in the heart of Europe, yet forging connections all over the world, ETH Zurich is pioneering effective solutions to the global challenges of today and tomorrow.
Extreme scale computing and data platform for cloud-resolving weather and climate modeling (EXCLAIM), is a six year project (2021-2027) of the Open ETH program. It aims to develop an ICON-model based infrastructure that is capable of running kilometer-scale climate simulations at both regional and global scales. Creating this infrastructure requires using innovative coding concepts and exploiting the next generation of supercomputer architectures and the power of novel hardware systems including accelerators such as Graphics Processing Units (GPU). The work is conducted in a highly collaborative effort that brings together computer scientists with data and domain experts.
The Center for Climate Systems Modeling (C2SM) is a science and technology center of ETH Zürich with its partner institutions MeteoSwiss, Empa, WSL, and Eawag. C2SM’s mission is to support the development and application of complex models of the weather, climate, and Earth system including its atmospheric composition as well as the analysis and visualization of climate data, to foster interdisciplinary research and interactions across the partner institutions and research groups, and to engage in a dialogue with the general public and other stakeholders about climate-relevant issues.
Founded in 1991, CSCS, the Swiss National Supercomputing Centre, develops and provides the key supercomputing capabilities required to solve important problems for science and/or society. Through a transparent, peer-reviewed allocation process, the centre enables world-class research with a scientific user lab available to domestic and international researchers. CSCS's resources are open to academia and are also available to users from industry and the business sector. The centre is operated by ETH Zurich and is located in Lugano, with additional offices in Zurich.
Switzerland’s national weather and climate service, MeteoSwiss, has been playing an important role in our country’s safety and prosperity for almost 160 years. MeteoSwiss is an office of the federal administration of Switzerland and operates the national surface and radar measurement network, collects, manages and analyzes weather and climate data and produces forecasts. The national weather and climate service also issues information, warnings and advice and is highly engaged in researching and developing tailor-made products and services.
Zurich Tourism is responsible for destination marketing and thus for profiling the brand of the city and region of Zurich as a highly diverse tourist destination. The organization employs approximately 75 staff, as well as around the same number of freelance tour guides, and is active in various markets all over the world.
